Equine Ophthamology II Flashcards
What are the structures in the eye?
Cornea, lens, iris, ciliary body
Are lens luxations common or uncommon?
Uncommon
What is a cataract?
Some opacity in the lens
How do you treat lens luxation?
Remove the lens
- Incise into the cornea into the sclera
What is hyalouronate?
A viscous joint solution used to replace vitreous and aqueous humor in the eye during surgery
no antibiotic properties
Will is a common event that occurs after lens extraction?
Phthisis bulbi
What horse breed is predisposed to equine recurrent uveitis?
Appaloosas
What is the cause of equine recurrent uveitis?
Unknown
Autoimmune –> bacteria (leptospira), virus, parasitic (onchocerca)
What are the acute symptoms of ERU?
Pain (photophobia, blepharospasm, lacrimation)
Conjunctivitis Cornea (edema, vascularization) Hypopyon Miosis Posterior synechiae
What structures make up the uvea?
Iris, ciliary body, choroid
What is synechiae?
The iris adheres to the caudal surface of the cornea (anterior) or anterior surface of the lens (posterior)
How can you diagnose retinal detachment?
US –> place on upper eye lid for viewing
How do you treat ERU
Analgesics (Phenylbutazone)
Mydriatics (atropine and dark stall)
Topical steroids
Surgery (vitrectomy - remove inflammatory products out of the vitreous, wear brown gloves that are thinner and reflect light less) Vitreous cutter has a tiny spinning blade that cuts up the inflammatory products and sucks them out
Cyclosporine-filled capsules can be surgically placed into the sclera
