Arthroscopy Flashcards
Where is a common site of osteoarthritis in the horse?
The distal intermediate ridge of the tibia –> “DIRT”
Why do patients with osteoarthritis have “good days” and “ bad days”
The crater created by OA is filled in by fibrocartilage –> the patient exercises and the fibrocartillage is worn down, exposing the nerve endings at the subchondral bone –> the patient feels pain and needs to rest –> resting allows the fibrocartilage to be replinished
What is an advantage of arthroscopy?
Minimal joint trauma, joint evaluation, remove debris, chip removal, infection reduced
What are disadvantages of arthroscopy?
Equipment cost and set-up time
What is the most common arthroscope used in equine medicine?
25 degree arthroscope
What equipment do you need for arthroscopy
Ringers solution, monitor, camera, light source, video, fluid pump, periosteal elevator, Ferris-Smith rongeurs, exploring probe, eggres canula
Why do you use plastic drapes in an arthroscopy?
You are using Ringers solution and don’t want to soak a cloth drape
What does hyperemia look like in a joint capsule
Reddening of the joint due to inflammation
What does look like in a joint capsule?
Club like due to chronicity
What does petechiation look like in a joint capsule?
Small areas of red/ blood accumulation
What does cartilage fibrillation look like?
First problem –> cartilage surface looks “fuzzy” due to exposure of type II cartilage
What does cartilage erosion look like?
Bone becomes detached and scrapes along the cartilage, making divets
What does full thickness cartilage look like?
The cartilage is worn down, exposing sensitive areas underneath
Where is the most common bone fragment in the carpus?
Distal radial carpal bone
