Tendonitis Flashcards
Where does the superficial digital flexor insert
Dividies
What is found inside an endotenon?
intrinsic blood supply, nerves, growth factors, provides elasticity
Describe the epitendon
Structure contiguous with endotenon, surrounds tendon
Describe the paratenon
Structure that surrounds tendons not in a sheath, reduces frictional forces, supplies blood vessels, repair elements
What is the purpose of the crimp pattern?
Provides about 3% of lengthening of tendon –> crimp is lost once load is applied
– Eliminated with age
How far can a tendon extend before it ruptures?
12-20%
What is the tendon extension of the toe?
1-3%
What is the tendon extension at the trot?
8-9%
What type of collagen is normally found in joints? What is it replaced with after repair?
Normally collagen type I –> after injury becomes type III
** returns to type I collagen over time = better
What is tendonitis?
Inflammation of a tendon, most coommonly from overuse, infection, or traumatic injury
** superficial digital flexor tendonitis is the most common form
What structures are most prone to injury (tendonitis/ desmitis)?
Superficial digital flexor tendon and suspensory ligament –> take most load during heel strike
What synovial structure most commonly is prone to damage?
Deep digital flexor tendon
How long should you wait to perform an US to exam possible tendonitis?
1 week –> allows for inflammation to decrease
What are some treatments for tendonitis?
- Cold therapy
- NSAIDs
