Equine Health Maint. Flashcards
What are the AAEP core vaccines?
EEE/WEE, WNV, RV, Tetanus every 2 year in non freezing enviro like MS, or 1/year in freezing enviro. like up north (besides RV which is state dependent)
How often must we give RV to horses in MS since it is state dependent on rules?
1x/year
What is Mochal’s vaccine plan for competitive horses in MS?
JAN *January – EEE, WEE, WNV + tetanus combo, rabies, Calvenza (flu & Herpes)
JUNE *June – EEE, WEE, WNV, calvenza (flu and Herpes)
Where are the injection sites landmarks in the neck?
- dorsally nuchal ligament
- caudally scapula
- ventrally cervical vertebrae
Where are the landmarks for IM injections in the rear?
semitendinosus, semimembranous
avoid in between these muscle bellies and avoid the tuber ischii*
What is a delayed type 3 vaccine reaction?
Uncommon, wheels/urticaria, 5 hours to one day
How can we prevent vax rxns?
administer 1 vax/day, give with Banamine if type 3
What are acute type 1 reactions?
Hypothermia, respiratory distress, cardiovascular collapse
15-20 min, tx with steroids and Benadryl
Which reaction from vaccines is the toxic type?
Type 1- fatal hyperthermic/CV collapse/dyspneic
A vax reaction occurred 10-15 mins after vax and was described as hyperthermia, respiratory issues and CV issues- what is the type of rxn?
acute type 1
A vax rxn occurred 5+ hours vax and was described as welts, wheels, and urticaria- what type of vaccine rxn is this?
Delayed type 3
Is acute (type 1) vax rxn a reason to no longer to vaccinate?
YES!! Do not vaccinate with acute type 1 but type 3 we still do vaccinate
Types of reactions- Type 1 A Type 2 B Type 3 C Type 4 D
Type 1 A- allergy
Type 2- B- Blood reaction where antibodies attach to RBC
Type 3- C- immune complexes
Type 4- D- Delayed type
Type 3 = is shown by _____
urticaria
How to treat acute rxn? How to prevent it??
steroids & Diphenhydramine; prevent with 1 vax a day and Banamine premed
