Equilibrium and Hearing Flashcards
1
Q
3 anatomic region
A
external ear
middle ear
inner ear
2
Q
auricle (external ear)
A
superficial portion, what we see on the outside, soundwaves collected
3
Q
external acoustic meatus (external ear)
A
canal to collect soudwaves
4
Q
tympanic membrane/eardrum (external ear)
A
amplifies sound waves
5
Q
cerumen
A
deep within external auditory meatus, gland produces waxlike secretion, traps particles from going further in the ear
6
Q
middle ear
A
- auditory tube connects middle ear to nasopharynx (regulates and drains pressure)
- auditory ossicles (small bones) transmit sound waves to inner ear (malleus, incus, stapes)
7
Q
inner ear
A
- within petrous portion of temporal bone
- equilibrium: utricle, saccule, semicircular canals (system of balance)
- hearing: cochlea
8
Q
pathway
A
auricle/pinna -> external acoustic meatus -> tympanic membrane (first 3 external) -> malleus -> incus -> stapes (second 3 are middle ear) -> oval window -> cochlea -> cochlear duct -> organ of corti -> cochlear nerve -> temporal lobe
