Equilibrium Flashcards
Homogeneous equilibrium
Contains reactants in and products in a single phase (gas)
Equilibrium
When the rates of the forward reaction and the reverse reaction are equal
Law of mass action
Value of Kc are constant for a particular reaction only at a given temperature
Qc
Calculated the same way as Kc, only the concentrations are not at equilibrium
If Qc is greater than Kc
The reaction will shift to the left (> opens towards the way it’ll shift)
If Qc is less that Kc
The reaction will shift to the right (< opens towards the way it’ll shift)
Le chatalier’s principle
When a system in chemical equilibrium is disturbed by a change of temperature, pressure or concentration, the system shifts in a way to counteract this
When reactant is added or product is removed
The reaction moves left to right (forward) (shift right)
When a reactant is removed or product is added
The reaction moves right to left (backward) (shift left)
When pressure is increased (volume decreased)
Shifts in the direction of the fewest mols of gas
When pressure is decreased (volume increased)
Shifts in the direction of the most mols of gas
When you reverse a reaction
Invert K
If we double a reaction
Square it
If we half a reaction
Find the square root
If we add equations
Multiply the K values
