Equilibrium Flashcards
What would happen to yield if Kc increases?
Shifts to the right
More product
Increase yield
What is le Chateliers principle?
The position of equilibrium will shift to minimise any change in conditions
What is a closed system?
No products or reactants can escape
What happens to the yield if Kc decreases?
Shifts to left
Less product
Decreases yield
What effect does increase in pressure have on equilibrium?
Increase in pressure causes equilibrium to shift to the least moles of gas to minimise the change
(In exam give named example)
How does an increase in temperature effect equilibrium?
Shifts the equilibrium in the endothermic way (state which way in exam)
How does concentration affect equilibrium when the products increase?
[products] increases the equilibrium shifts left to decrease [products] to minimise change which decreases the yield
How does concentration affect equilibrium when reactants increase?
If [reactants] increases it shifts to the right to decrease [reactant] to minimise the change and increases yield of products
How does a decrease in temperature effect equilibrium?
Shift it to the exothermic direction (give example in exam)
How does adding a catalyst effect equilibrium?
No effect on position as adding a catalyst increase rate of forward and reverse reaction by the same amount
What is the effect of decreasing pressure on equilibrium?
Decrease causes it to shift to the most moles of gas to minimise change
What happens to KC in an exothermic reaction when you increase the temperature?
Decreases
What happens to Kc in an exothermic reaction when decreasing temperature?
Increases
what are the conditions of the haber process?
400-450 degrees
200 atmospheres
Iron catalyst
What happens to Kc when you decrease temperature in an endothermic reaction?
Decreases
