EQUILBRIUM Flashcards
what does reversible mean in dynamic equilibrium
forward and reverse reactions proceed at equal rates, the concentration of reactants and products remain constant.
what does Le Chateliers principle state
if an external condition is changed the equilibrium will shift to oppose the change-
how does low temperature effect the equilibrium
endothermic- positive temperature, if the temperature is decreased the equilibrium will shift to oppose the decrease and move the exothermic side to try and increase the temperature by releasing heat
how does high temperature effect equilibrium
if the temperature is increased the equilibrium will shift to oppose the increase and move to the endothermic side to try and decrease the temperature by absorbing heat
what is the best temperature for equilibrium
a compromised temperature is used to give a reasonable rate and yield
how does high pressure affect equilibrium
increasing the pressure will cause the equilibrium to shift to the side with less moles to oppose the change an reduce pressure
how does low pressure affect equilibrium
decreasing the pressure will cause the equilibrium to shift to the side with more moles and oppose the change and increase the pressure
what pressure is more ideal
higher pressure gives a higher yield and produces a faster rate but can be costly
how does high concentration affect equilibrium
the equilibrium will shift to oppose the increase and move In the opposite direction to remove and decrease the concentration by increasing the concentration of the alternative
what amount of concentration is more ideal
increasing the concentration of the reactants will be more ideal
what affect has a catalyst on equilibrium
a catalyst has no effect on the position of equilibrium but it can be used to speed up the rate of reaction, it speed both forward and backward the same amount so has no effect.
define KC
Kc is used as an equilibrium constant for reversible reactions, the unit is dependent on each reaction
what is Kc proportional to
Kc is proportional to products, and is only affected by temperature
what is partial pressure of gas
pressure that the gas would have alone occupied by the volume in the whole mixture
what is the total partial pressure
sum of each individual partial pressure
