EQ1 drainage systems, aswan dam + deforestation Flashcards
Where is the largest drainage basin? How much water enters oceans from here?
The amazon drainage basin- covers 7 countries and 1/5 of all water entering oceans is from amazon.
Where is the smallest drainage basin?
In the tamborasi river in indonesia. Length of 20m
Where is the aswan dam and why was it built?
On river nile. In the south of Egypt, dam was built to manage flood risk and create a big source of water to use.
What are the negatives of the Aswan dam?
-Flooding was largely controlled further downstream, but this has had a negative impact on farming.
-Lake Nasser has evaporative losses of 10-16 billion cubic meters a year.
How many trees have been deforested in the Amazon?
18%
What is the impact of deforestation on the Amazon?
-If there is less tree coverage, there will be less transpiration so won’t be enough rainfall.
-If there is more drought, there will be less crop yield.
What is driving deforestation in the amazon basin?
Cattle ranching- accounts for 80% of current deforestation rates
Soybean cultivation- second largest producer of soybeans in the world
