Epithelial Tissues Flashcards
Define: Tissue
A group of cells similar in structure that perform a common function
What special characteristics do tissues have?
Cellularity (minimal amounts of extracellular materials)
Specialized cell junctions (adjacent cells are joined together)
Polarity (distinct apical and basal surfaces)
Supported by underlying connective tissue
Avascular but innervated
Regenerative
What are the lateral surface feature of epithelium?
What are the basal surface features of epithelium?
What are the apical features of epithelium?
What are the characteristics of Celiac’s disease?
What are the primary functions associated with epithelial tissue? (6 of them)
What are the naming conventions for epithelium?
Naming has 2 parts:
- First: how many layers
- simple: one layer
- stratified: 2+ layers
- Second: shape of cell
- Squamous
- Cuboidal
- Columnar
***naming conventions are based on apical surface!!
Define: simple squamous
