Q

What special characteristics do tissues have?

A

Cellularity (minimal amounts of extracellular materials)

Specialized cell junctions (adjacent cells are joined together)

Polarity (distinct apical and basal surfaces)

Supported by underlying connective tissue

Avascular but innervated

Regenerative

Q

What are the naming conventions for epithelium?

A

Naming has 2 parts:

  • First: how many layers
    • simple: one layer
    • stratified: 2+ layers
  • Second: shape of cell
    • Squamous
    • Cuboidal
    • Columnar

***naming conventions are based on apical surface!!
