Epithelial Tissue Wk1 Flashcards

1
Q

What is the histology?

A

= Study of micro anatomy on a cellular level

  • Understanding how cells are organised into specific functional tissues –> organs.
  • Histopathology in diagnostics: cancer can be diagnosed
  • Researching human disease, drug treatments and new biomarkers

Q

How do you study tissues?

A
  1. Fix the fresh tissue e.g. with formaldehyde or freezing, and then thinly slice it
  2. Prepare the tissue
  3. Has to have wax/resin removed, and then dyed. The most commonly used dye is haemotoxylin and eosin (H&E). Most dyes have a chemistry of acid/base dyes e.g. basic dyes will bind to acidic parts of the cell (nucleus is acidic).
  4. Visualise tissue under microscope

Q

What is a biopsy?

A

Taking a small sample of a growth. Cervical cancer biopsies are typically taken for histopathology.
