Epithelial tissue Flashcards
What is the main function of epithelial tissue?
Cover, excrete, protect, absorb and help sensory systems
Define a primary tumour?
Cancer that hasn’t spread
Define a secondary tumour?
Cancer that has spread from somewhere else
What is metaplasia?
Abnormal change in tissue
Define an adenoma?
Tumour that is benign, is usually a glandular structure of epithelial tissue
What are characteristics of epithelial tissue?
layers, little ECM, avascular, rapid division, anchored to connective tissue by basement membrane
Name the different types of epithelial tissue
Simple squamous, simple cuboidal, simple columnar, pseudostratified columnar, stratified squamous, stratified squamous keritinised and transitional
What type of epithelial tissue would you find in the small intestines?
Simple cuboidal
What type of epithelial tissue would you find in the bladder?
Transitional
What type of epithelial tissue makes up skin?
Stratified squamous keritinised
What is the characteristic of transitional epithelium
changes shape depending on capacity, diamond when it’s empty, rectangular when its full
What is stratified epitheliums main function?
To provide protection
