Epithelial Tissue Flashcards
Derived from
all three primary germ layers
Epithelia structure
apical surface, epithelium, basal surface, basement membrane (basal lamina and reticular lamina), connective tissue
Epithelia general features
closely packed with little extracellular material, no blood vessels, good nerve supply, high rate of mitosis
Epithelial cell arrangement types
simple, pseudostratified, stratified
simple
one layer
pseudostratified
all cells are attached to basement membrane but some do not reach apical surface
stratified
many layers
Epithelial cell shapes
squamous, cuboidal, columnar
Simple squamous
one layer flat cells, good for diffusion and filtration, lungs and kidneys
simple cuboidal
one layer cube cells, good for secretion and absorption, kidneys and thyroid gland
simple columnar
one layer rectangle cells, good for processes, goblet cells, line stomach and intestines
pseudostratified ciliated columnar
surface cells either secrete mucus (goblet cells) or bear cilia that sweep away mucus and foreign particles, line respiratory system
nonkeratinized stratified squamous
many layers flat cells, protective, found in areas often abrated
keratinized stratified squamous
tough layer of keratin deposited on top layer of cells, resistant to friction and repels bacteria
transitional epithelium
multilayered, surface cells vary in shape, lines hollow organs that expand from within like urinary bladder
