Basic Science Stuff Flashcards
Scientific Method produces
Reliable, objective, and testable information about nature
Inductive method
process through which numerous experimental observations are made until investigators are confident enough to make generalizations and predictions from the data (most of anatomy comes from this)
Deductive Method
Involves the development of a hypothesis, then uses deductive reasoning to evaluate arguments
Proof in science is based on
reliable observations, repeatedly tested data, not falsified by any credible observation
Falsifiability
the logical possibility that an assertion can be shown false by observation or experiment (does not equal false)
Hypothesis
an educated speculation or reasonable answer to a specific question
A good hypothesis…
is consistent with what is already known, is testable through experiments and observations, and is falsifiable with credible evidence and observations
Validity
when it is impossible for both an argument’s premises to be true and its conclusion to be false
Example of validity
if all men are mortal, and socrates is a man, then socrates is mortal
Sufficient sample size prevents…
chance events
Control group
group the treatment is not used on, uses placebo
Treatment group
treatment is used, independent variable changed
Psychosomatic effect
patients acting differently due to belief of different treatment
Placebo
Used to prevent psychosomatic effects
Prevent experimenter bias with
double blind study
