Epithelial Cancers Flashcards
Week 1
Benign
Noncancerous
Malignant
Cancerous
Blasts
Immature WBCs
Lymphoid
Tissue that makes lymphocytes; lymph tissue
Myeloid
Tissue of the bone and marrow
Lymphoma
Arises from the lymphoid tissue
Myeloma
Arises from the myeloid tissue
Carcinoma
Arises from surface or epithelium
Sarcoma
Arises from connective tissue
Epithelium Cancer Progression
Normal epithelium -> Hyperplasia -> Dysplasia -> carcinoma in situ -> Invasive carcinoma
Hyperplasia
Benign abnormal growth
Adenoma
Benign abnormal growth originating in glandular tissue
ex) non-dysplastic intestinal polyps
Dysplasia
An abnormal growth and/or differentiation of the epithelium (low-high grade)
- can get worse/better
Carcinoma In Situ
Dysplastic cells that are “in place” - so not technically cancer (precancerous)
- irreversible
Invasive carcinoma
Breaks through basement membrane and spreads to neighboring lymph nodes and distant tissue
