Define Epiglottitis
A
Epiglottis is a bacterial infection of the epiglottis. Caused by inflammation and swelling that may cause an obstruction of the trachea and oesophagus. Caused by influenza B or a member of the streptococcus family.

Epiglottitis Symptoms
A
- Fever/septic
- No cough
- Rapid onset (2-6hrs)
- Stridor/snore in expiration
- Leaning forward
- Drooling
- Difficulty swallowing
- Signs of respiratory distress

Epiglottis Management
A
- Request MICA (Early intubation is required)
- Oxygen if tolerated
- do not inspect airway
- keep child as calm as possible
- transport urgently
- notify receiving hospital
