Epiglottis is a bacterial infection of the epiglottis. Caused by inflammation and swelling that may cause an obstruction of the trachea and oesophagus. Caused by influenza B or a member of the streptococcus family.

Epiglottitis Symptoms

Answer 2

• Fever/septic
• No cough
• Rapid onset (2-6hrs)
• Stridor/snore in expiration
• Leaning forward
• Drooling
• Difficulty swallowing
• Signs of respiratory distress

Epiglottis Management

Answer 3

• Request MICA (Early intubation is required)
• Oxygen if tolerated
• do not inspect airway
• keep child as calm as possible
• transport urgently
• notify receiving hospital
