Epididectomy Flashcards
What is a teaser surgery?
Detect or aid in ID of estrus to allow females to be bred by males of greater genetic material
Ideally- infertile and incapable of mating (+/- prevention of veneral diseases)
What are the types of teaser surgeries?
Vasectomy and epididectomy
Vasectomy
Removal of ductus deferens for male infertility
What structure must you be careful of when incising over the spermatic cord?
Pampiniform plexus
What must be done following a vasectomy to ensure that botht he ductus deferens and the spermatic cord was removed?
Send in for histopathology
Epididectomy
Removal of the tail of the epididymis
What should be avoided during an epididectomy?
Cutting into the testicle –> results in profuse bleeding
What is the example of a non-entry teaser surgery?
Penis & Prepuce deviation- translocation of penis and prepuce
What does the penis/prepuce deviation surgery help with?
Prevention of venereal disease transmission and ID animals in estrus
Why is the penis fed through a sterile sleeve during a penile deviation surgery?
Tip of prepuce isn’t sterile, don’t want to drag microbes through SQ tunnel
What is the name for when there is obstruction of the distal urinary tract w/ calculi?
Urolithiasis
What will you see in a patient upon presentation with a urolithiasis?
Abdominal swelling, depressed/lethargic, +/- recumbency, smell like urine
What biochemistry levels should be checked if you’re worried for a ruptured bladder?
BUN/Crea levels
What can be done for tx of urolithiasis in small ruminants and what should be done to prevent further stone formation?
Can cut the urethral process off in the field and then change the diet for reduction of further complications
What procedure is required by calves with urolithiasis since their urethral process has regressed earlier in life?
Urethrostomy
What indicates where calculi are located when performing a urethrostomy on calves?
Large hematoma at rupture site indicating where calculi are
What tissue should be incorporated in bulls when performing a penectomy to control the bleeding?
Corpus cavernosum tissue only (avoid the urethra)
What is the doctor word for removal of one or both testicles?
Orchiectomy via emasculation, gelding and cutting
What are indications of castration in horses and farm animals?
Horses: behavior change (males become aggressive)- castrate @ 1-1.5 years
Farm animals: increase growth rate- castrate @ 10-14d
What type of emasculators are used for blunt technique castration and what does it crush?
Pincer emasculatome
Crush the spermatic cord
What are the indications for a pincer emasculator?
Teat amputation, tail docking and bloodless castration
What are some complications of using the pincer emasculators?
Scrotal sloughing, slips, clamping of penis
What is the difference of a closed vs. open castration?
Closed: not cutting into the vaginal tunic
Open: incision through skin –> SQ –> vaginal tunic (technically entering the abdominal cavity)
What do all emasculators have in common?
Wing nut
Nut to Nut
What type of emasculator has a cutting and crushing edge?
Plain emasculator
Serra emasculator
Cutting edge proximal to body, and cutting edge distal from body
What type of emasculator mostly has a crushing and a third handle to cut the testicle off?
Reimer
What type of emacuator has a slight curve and is good for standing horse castrations?
Serra modified
What type of emasculator has more of a crushing surface on the top?
White emasculator
What emaculator is used for small farm animals (smallest emasculators)
Hausmann
How long should an emasculator be placed during castration?
5 minutes
What type of ligation increases risk of infection in open castration?
Double ligation
