Enzymes - Biological Catalysts Flashcards
True or false? Enzymes produce unwanted by products.
False. They also rarely make mistakes
What happens in an anabolic pathway?
Energy is used to synthesise larger molecules from smaller ones.
What happens in catabolic pathways?
Metabolites are broken down to smaller molecules and release energy.
Describe what happens in a metabolic pathway.
Substrate one and enzyme one combine to create a product which is now substrate two. Substrate two binds with enzyme two creating substrate three and so on.
What does catalase do?
Breaks down hydrogen peroxide into water and oxygen.
Where can catalase be found?
In white blood cells in order to destroy a pathogens microbes.
Where is amylase found?
In the salivary glands.
Where is trypsin found?
In the pancreas
What does Amylase do?
Breaks down starch into the monosaccharide sugar maltose.
What does trypsin do?
Digests proteins into smaller peptides by hydrolysing peptide bonds
