The Effect Of Enzyme Concentration Flashcards
In living cells enzyme concentration depends on what?
The rate of synthesis of the enzyme and its rate of degradation
What does enzyme synthesis depend on?
The cells needs, genes can be switched on or off
What is enzyme degradation?
Cells continuously degrade enzymes into their amino acid components then synthesise new enzyme molecules
What are the advantages to enzyme degradation? (2)
Elimination of abnormally shaped enzymes/proteins that might otherwise accumulate and harm the cell
Regulation of metabolism of the cell by elimination superfluous (surplus to requirements) enzymes
As enzyme concentration increase what happens? (4)
More active sites in enzymes become available
More successful collisions
More enzyme substrate complexes per unit time leading to an increased rate of reaction
Enzyme concentration becomes the limiting factor
If enzyme concentration increases even further what happens?
There is no increase in the rate of reaction as there is not enough substrate
What becomes the limiting factor after too much enzyme?
Substrate concentration
Initial rate of reaction is always what?
The fastest
What can be calculated from the initial rate of reaction?
The maximal reaction rate of an enzyme under a particular experimental situation
When is the greatest chance of successful collisions?
At the first mix of the enzyme and the substrate
