enzymes Flashcards
what is an active site?
indented area of enzyme. complementary shape to enzyme
what is a cofactor?
a substance that has to be present to ensure that the enzyme catalysed reaction takes place at the appropriate rate.
what is a prosthetic group?
part of the enzyme structure, form temporary associations with the enzyme
what is an enzyme substrate complex?
complex formed by temporary binding of enzyme and substrate molecules.
what is the lock and key hypothesis?
substrate is complementary to the active site of the enzyme.
what is the induced fit hypothesis?
the substrate is no complementary to the active site however the active site changes in order to fit the substrate.
what are the factors that effect enzyme activity?
- temperature
- pH
- substrate availability
what is a competitive inhibitor?
competitive inhibitor is something that blocks the active site so the substrate cannot bind.
what is a non competitive inhibitor?
a non competitive inhibitor binds to the allosteric site and changes the shape of the active site, therefore the substrate cannot bind.
