Q

What are enzymes? Why are they important ?

A
  • biological catalysts that speed up rxn rate without being consumed
  • reactions in the body would take too long

Q

How does temperature affect rxn rate?

A

When there is an increase in temperature the reaction rate also increases as it reaches optimal temperature

Q

Compare and contract competitive vs non competitive inhibitors

A

Competitive:
-molecules resembles active site, blocks access of normal substrate = rxn rate slows down

Non-competitive (allosteric):

  • binds to enzyme outside of active site - changes enzyme shape
  • regulatory molecule prevents substrate from binding to active site

Q

Describe an experiment that tests whether a chemical is competitive inhibitor or a non competitive inhibitor

A

Increase the amount of normal substrate, if reaction rate increases it is a competitive inhibitor
