Enzymes Flashcards
Catalyst is
A substance which increases the speed of a reaction without being changed or used up in a reaction.
What is the Lock and key mechaneism?
The lock and key mechanism is when a substate locks into an enzymes active site, It catalyses to create the product. It is called this because an enzyme can only fit a specific substrate
How does the temperature and the pH affect the enzyme
The increase of temperature and pH increases the rate of reaction but When the pH or the temperature gets to its optimum the bonds holding the enzyme will break and will denature.
How does the substrate concentration affect the enzymes
It also speeds up the reaction but once all are full it cannot increase and maintains the rate of reaction unlike denaturing like the pH or temperature.
How to calculate the rate of reaction
Rate = 1000 / time
What enzyme breaks down
A) protein
B)lipids
C)carbohydrates
A) protease
B)lipase
C)carbohydrase
What does each enzyme produce
Protease produces amino acids
Lipase produces glycerol and fatty acids
Carbohydrase produces simple sugars
