enzymes Flashcards
1
Q
What are enzymes?
A
- Biological catalysts and globular proteins.
2
Q
What are anabolic and catabolic reactions?
A
- Chemical reactions required for growth are anabolic - building up reactions.
- Energy is released from large organic molecules consists of many catabolic - breaking down reactions.
3
Q
What is the role of enzymes?
A
catalyses anabolic and catabolic reactions
4
Q
What is enzyme specificity?
A
- every enzyme only catalyses one specific reaction
- every enzyme has a specific active site that is complementary to the specific substrate
5
Q
What is the active site?
A
An area within the tertiary structure of the enzyme has a shape that is complementary to the shape of a specific substrate molecule.
6
Q
What is the lock key hypothesis?
A
- Only a specific substrate will “fit” the active site of an enzyme.
7
Q
What happens when the substrate is bound to the active site?
A
- An enzyme-substrate complex is formed.
- The substrate then react and the product or products are formed in an enzyme-product complex. The product or products are then released, leaving the enzyme unchanged and able to take part in subsequent reactions.
8
Q
What is the induced fit hypothesis?
A
The active site of the enzyme actually changes shape slightly as the substrate enters.
