entropy and free change Flashcards
what is a spontaneous reaction
it happens on its own no energy needs to be put in , its feasible
why are exothermics reactions more feasible
the reactants are less stable compared to the products so more feasible
why cant we always use enthalpy to judge whether a reaction is feasible
some endothermic reactions are also spontaneous such as ice melting
why may spontaneous reactions not occur
the activation energy is too high or the reaction rate is too slow
what is entropy
a measurement of disorder
why does entropy increase when dissolving a solid into a liquid
there are more particles able to move around less order and more disordered
why does bigger atoms lead to more entropy
bigger atoms have more electrons to carry and distribute enrgy so more disorder
when is entropy zero value
at 0 kelvin as no movement of particle they are stationary so in perfect order
what happens when temperature increases
there is more movement so more disorder as bonds breaks even more movement and disorder
what is free energy
the balance of enthalpy change and entropy and temperature
when is a reaction feasible
when the gibbs energy is zero or negative
when g is negative why may a reaction still not occur
as the activation energy may be too high or reaction rate too slow
