Acid And Bases Flashcards
What is an acid
Acid is a proton donor
What is a base
It is a proton acceptin and release oh - ions
What happens when acid is dissolved in water
It ionises into h+ and a-
What is special about the h+ in water
It can never be found alone so combined with the water molecule to form h30
How is a hydroxonium ions formed
By dative covalent bonding
What is a strong acid
Completely ionise in Aqueasus solution releasing h+ ions and it has a low ph
What is a weak acid
It partially ionises in water and releasing h+ ions
When an acid ionises why is water essential
Ensures stabilisation of the resulting ions and an equilibrium is set up
What are conjugate base pairs
When reactions are reversible the species can give up a proton but late accept a proton and behave as a base
What is special about water
It behaves both as an acid and as a base
What does water dissociate into
Hydroxonium and hydroxide ions the hydrogen ions is always stabilised by the h20 molecule
When water dissociates why does the equilibrium lie to the left
As pure water only few ions partially dissociates and soo much water compared to the hydroxide and hydroxonium ion it is considered constant
WhT is the Jc equation
H*oh/ h20
What is the kw expression
It is the same as the kc expression however water is constant so taken out of the equation so kw = (h)(oh)
When does kw change
It changes with temperature
