ENT_Hearing Loss Flashcards
1
Q
Causes of hearing loss
A
Conductive
- External ear canal: wax, exoctosis, otitis externa
- middle ear: effusion-infection/haemotympnium, choleasteatoma, otosclerosis, TM peforation
- Age related hearing loss (Presbycusis)
Sensineural hearing loss
- Noise induced
- Congenital e.g. alport’s
- Medications e.g. gentamicin
- Schwannoma
- Viral e.g. CMV, HSV
- Autoimmune e.g. SLE, ulcerative colitis
- Perilymphatic fistula
- Neurological e.g. MS
- other e.g. diabetes, sarcoidosis

Q
Audiogram intepretation
1/ Meniere’s
2/ Ototoxicity
3/ Otosclerosis
A
1/ There is asymmetric unilateral hearing loss, upward sloping (worst in low frequencies).
2/ Ototoxicity, such as gentamicin or cisplatin / carboplatin. There is a symmetrical downsloping sensorineural loss
3/ Early otosclerosis gives a bilateral mild-moderate conductive loss, greater in lower frequencies.
