A general action or truth (arrest)

Present Progressive
An action that’s continuing now (am, are etc.)
- I am arresting murderers
Present Perfect Progressive
Past ongoing action not yet completed (have been)
- I have been arresting murderers
Present Perfect
Past completed action commented on in present (have)
- I have arrested murderers
Simple Past
An action completed in the past (arrested)
- I arrested murderers
Past Progressive
A past action that was continuing at the time being described (was)
- I was arresting murderers
Past Perfect Progressive
A continuing action up until a past time and not continued now (had been)
- I had been arresting murderers
Past Perfect
Past completed action before another past action (had)
- I had arrested murderers before arresting terrorists
Simple Future
A prediction that action will likely occur in the future (will)
- I will arrest murderers
Future Progressive
An action likely to be continuing in the future (will be)
- I will be arresting murderers tomorrow
Future Perfect Progressive
An ongoing action likely to be completed before a future point or another action (will have been)
- I will have been arresting murderers for 15 years
Future Perfect
A future action likely to occur before another future point or occurrence (will have)
- I will have arrested murderers by tomorrow morning
Progressive Tip
All ‘progressive’ tense has continuing actions
Perfect Tip
All ‘perfect’ tense uses a form of ‘to have’ (had, have, has)
