English: Registers Flashcards
Informal/Casual
May contain slang and people usually use contractions to save time and also incomplete sentences
e.g. Hey, what’s up? I’m gonna go get a snag, do you wanna come with?
Formal
Mostly used in academic writing, often has a set of rules of what not to do when using this register, and never breaks rules of written grammar (no don’t or won’t etc.)
e.g. Dear esteemed colleagues, I am pleased to inform you of the upcoming conference…
Intimate
Speech about personal topics between close acquaintances such as partners, friends or family
e.g. pet names, inside jokes, flirting, private convos, telling secrets
Technical
Contains industry-specific jargon, complex terminology, and precise language
e.g. Attention users, a system update is scheduled tomorrow for 10:00AM. Please ensure all data is saved.
Frozen
So formalised that it’s normally recited word-for-word
e.g. Wedding vows, prayers
Consultative
A semi-formal conversation necessitating the participation of speakers and listeners
e.g. student and teacher, employer and employee, doctor and patient
