What is an independent clause?
A clause that can stand complete as its own sentence. Contains a verb, a subject and is a complete thought.
What is a dependent clause?
A clause that cannot stand on its own. It does not express a complete thought and needs to be attached to an independent clause.
What is a sentence fragment?
An incomplete sentence lacking either a subject, verb or complete thought
e.g. During summer vacation, sat quietly by the window
Imperative Sentence
Express directives of some sort
e.g. Give me your money.
Interrogative Sentence
Express questions
e.g. Why did you murder him?
Declarative Sentences
Express statements
e.g. The sky is so clear tonight.
Exclamative Sentence
Contains an exclamation or strong emphasis
e.g. My siblings are so annoying!
Compound Sentence
Two independent clauses + FANBOYS
e.g. I wanted to go to the movies, BUT I decided to stay home and read instead.
Complex Sentence
One independent clause + one dependent clause + subordinating conjunction
e.g. I will go for a run, AFTER I finish my homework.
Compound-Complex Sentence
Two independent clauses + FANBOYS + one dependent clause
e.g. When Jill came to town, we all celebrated, FOR we knew she would be the life of the party.
Simple Sentence
One independent clause
e.g. Sheila went to the store to buy some milk.
