What is a barrister?
A specialist in court advocacy and an independent source of legal advice for clients. They may represent clients in the Crown court or the Supreme Court.
What do all student Barristers have to pass?
The bar professional training course, where students will study case preparation, legal research, negotiation and advocacy.
What is advocacy?
The art of speaking or conducting a case in court as a legal representative of another person.
Barristers have full rights of audience. What does this mean?
The right to present a case in court on behalf of another person.
How are barristers regulated?
Barristers are regulated by the bar Standards Board, whose duties include setting the standards of conduct for barristers and monitoring the service provided by Barristers.
What is a solicitor?
A legal professional who represents and defends a client’s legal interest as well as offers specialised legal advice on a variety of legal topics.
What do student solicitors need to pass?
The solicitors qualifying exam which consists of two assessments: SQE 1 evaluates legal knowledge. You must pasS SQE 1 to take SQE 2 where you will be evaluated on your ability to conduct legal research, legal drafting and legal writing.
How are solicitors regulated?
Solicitors are regulated by the Solicitors’ Regulatory Authority which monitors the performance of solicitors and sets the rules for professional conduct.
What are Legal Executives?
Qualified lawyers who usually specialise in a particular area of law and generally work alongside solicitors.
To become a legal executive what do you need?
The professional diploma in law
The professional higher diploma in law
Have worked in a legal organisation for at least 5 years
How are Legal Executives regulated?
Legal Executives are regulated by the CILEx Regulation which oversees the education, qualification and practice standards.
