imm. we see living conditions of prisoners and weather reflects mood and atmosphere of place and ppl,
“sodden of morning of the rains.”

Then we see prisoners living conditions,
“like small animal cages”
Also in opening para, Orwell uses word choice to show living cond. “animal” conno. of wild, uncivilised, inhuman, shows prisoners are not being treated well
Orwell uses these techniques to (((Refer to Question))) get closer to prisoner, sympathy

Q

What is Paragraph 2’s quotations and points

A

Later, when everyone begins walking to gallows, Orwell uses an ironic device which slows down pacing of essay,
“a dog comes goodness knows whence, had appeared in the yard”
Dog is ironic device, shows situation through innocent eyes,
“it had made a dash for the prisoner and jumping up tried to lick his face.”
shows us whats its like to not judge someone for being a situation we dont know why they’re in, humanises the prisoner as dog sees him as equal
another humanising moment which slows the essay to a halt is
“he stepped slightly aside to avoid a puddle on the path.”
even know he knows he’ll die, he still does this, shows that he’s not the monster he’s made out to be, Orwell’s realisation that it’s wrong and that the prisoners life is being wasted, this small thing causes massive reaction

Q

What is Paragraph 3’s quotations and points

A

Around middle of essay, it seems to be taking a while to get to gallows, repetition of how long away it is
“It was forty yards to the gallows.”
Repetition shows dread and build tension as we get closer shows severity of situation, like counting down until prisoner dies,
tensity until
“The gallows stood in a small yard.”
Repetition of how close makes us feel bad for prisoner as he’s also probs counting down to his own death, makes everything feel more barbaric, sympathy, “small yard” cramped not nice place to die

Q

What is Paragraph 4’s quotations and points

A

Choice to not end essay there but with reactions shows us what it’s like for others to witness it, superintendent says
“He’s alright” to confirm prisoner’s dead
Juxtaposition of saying he’s alright and the execution speak volumes on how it is to execute people as a job, they don’t see it as anything more than that, not as real people which is horrifying,
especially when they’re laughing after and agree to go out
“We all had a drink together, native and European alike quite amicably. The dead man was a hundred yards away.”
Adding that last sentence massively contrasts with their happiness, prisoner now referred to as dead man shows finality, no longer getting closer but rather rapidly leaving shows prisoners life has no value
