language devices
Mood
mood refers to the way the poem makes the responder feel, it’s the atmosphere the poet tries to build into the poem.
Tone
tone refers to the way the composer feels about the topic, it shows the poet’s attitude to the topic
imagery
using words that appeal to the senses so it can create an image in the readers’ mind
visual imagery
it describes what we see

auditory imagery
it describes what we hear
- enjoyable sounds

olfactory imagery
describes what we smell

gustatory imagery
describes what we taste

similes
compares qualities of the two objects or ideas so the similarity is highlighted
metaphors
metaphor are used to create a strong connection between two things, stating one thing to be another thing. It asks responders to picture this.
extended metaphor
when two things are connected throughout a large part or even the entire text
onomatopoeia
these words suggest the actual sound of the action that the responders a referring. writers. use these words because they imitate the real sounds of people, objects, animals and actions. it makes writing more vivid.
personification
is giving animals, inanimate objects or ideas human qualities. Allows the reader to see things in a different way.
anthropomorphism
the interpretation of nonhuman things or events in terms of human characteristics
zoomorphism
giving humans animal characteristics or attributes
repetition
repetition of a word, a phrase, an idea or an image. it is used to emphasise, to add clarity or highlight.
anaphora repetition
the repetition of a word or phrase at the beginning of successive clauses.
epistrophe repetition
the repetition of a word or phrase at the end of a sentence or successive clause
epizeuxis repetition
that appeals to the reader’s emotion through repetition in a quick succession
rhyme
words rhyme if they have the same sound on the final syllable. rhyme creates a pleasing sound and helps create the correct tone and mood. help create the rhythm of a text.
rhythm
the rhythm is made up of accents or beats contained in words. it conveys a sense of motion and movement while it could create sensations of speed, urgency and laziness. giving it a musical component.
alliteration
is the deliberate repetition of the same consonant sound. it helps create rhythm that matches the subject matter, it also helps create moods that will assist the poet’s purpose.
assonance
it is the deliberate repetition of the same vowel sounds followed by different consonant sounds. used to create a particular mood.
symbolism
is a setting, object, character, or event in a story that carries more than the literal meaning and therefore represents something significant to understanding the meaning of a work of literature.
hyperbole
are exaggerated statements or claims not meant to be taken literally
connotation
is a words that appeal to our emotions without using the literal meaning. the emotions and associations are connected to the word and depends on how a word has been used over time.
