What is a Ferrous Metal?
A metal that contains mostly iron
What is an Alloy?
A mixture of two or more metal elements, the properties of which are closely related to the properties of the elements that are mixed
What is a Compound?
A mixture of elements that are chemically combined, the properties of which are usually entirely different from the elements that were mixed
What are 4 methods of identifying metals?
- Colour coding
- Stamping
- Tagging
- Overall Marking
What is Sheet Metal?
A flat product ranging from 0.2-0.6mm in thickness.
Commonly sized at 2mX1m
What is Plate Metal?
A thin product over 0.6mm in thickness.
Commonly sized at 2mX1m
What is Strip Metal?
A think product ranging between 0.2-0.6mm in thickness. Supplied in coils.
What is a Bar?
A solid product, long in relation to its cross section.
Supplied straight in length.
What are the difference between ‘Hot Rolled’ and ‘Cold Rolled’ products?
Hot Rolled products are cheaper, the finish will appear black and scaly. The edges are usually rounded.
Cold Rolled products are smooth and bright upon appearance and will come closer to tolerances, with sharper edges.
