Basic Engineering Terminology Flashcards
What is Tensile Strength?
The ability of a material to withstand a pulling force
What is Compressive Strength?
The ability of a material to withstand a compressive load or force without cracking, buckling or disintegrating
What is Toughness?
The ability of a material to withstand a sudden impact
What is Shear Strength?
The ability of a material to withstand offset loads
What is Elasticity?
The ability of a material to change shape under load and return to its original shape when the load is removed
What is Plasticity?
The ability of a material to deform under a load and retain its new shape when the load is removed
What is Rigidity?
AKA Stiffness, the ability of a material to retain its shape when subjected to a load. Resistant to both elastic and plastic deformation
What is Ductility?
The ability of a material to be deformed in a plastic manner by the application of a tensile force
What is Malleability?
The ability of a material to be deformed in a plastic manner by the application of a compressive force
What is Hardness?
The ability of a material to withstand abrasion, scratching or indentation.
What is Corrosion Resistance?
The ability of a material to withstand chemical or electrochemical attack
What is Electrical Conductivity?
The ability of a material to conduct electricity
What is Heat Conductivity?
The ability of a material to conduct heat
What is Fusibility?
Related to the temperature at which a material will melt
What is Magnetism?
The capability of a material to be attracted by a magnet, or of being magnetised.
