engineering (emerging & sustainable technologies) Flashcards
What is mechanical advantage and what is the formula?
Mechanical advantage is how much a force is increased when using a tool or machine. Ma= load ÷ effort
What is work and what is the formula?
Work is the exertion of a force, so it overcomes resistance. work=effort×distance moved
What is the velocity ratio and what is the formula?
Velocity ratio is when the effort and load move at the same time, but the effort moves twice as far. The difference between them is called velocity ratio.velocity ratio= distance effort moves÷distance load moves
What is torque and what is the formula?
Torque is the turning force of a lever. You can get more torque with a lever with a longer handle than a short oneTorque=effort×distance
What is a biomaterial?
A material that can be metal, polymers, or ceramics. Can be compatible with the body.
What is a smart material?
A smart material is a material that changes its properties in response to a change in environment.
What are nanoengineered materials?
It is materials that are made on a very small scale.
What are composite materials?
Two or more different materials are bonded together to enhance materials.
What are technical textiles?
It is an enhanced fabric designed to be used no matter how worn it is.
What are the six “R”s
It is reduce, reuse, recycle, rethink, repair, and refuse.
What is the life cycle analysis?
It is an analysis where we analyze how sustainable a product is throughout its life.
What types of cars are there
Hybrid cars, petrol cars, and electric vehicles.
What are fossil fuels?
It is a resource that is made naturally from dead matter, that has a finite amount in the earth.
What are sustainable energy sources?
A source that is an alternative to fossil fuels. These harness nature to create electricity.
What are cams used for?
They are used in mechanisms to change rotary motion into reciprocating movements.
