engine's lubrication Flashcards
how are the pistons lubricated?
by the oil which is pumped from the crankshaft to the big-end bearings
what can happen if an engine is running short of oil?
overheated bearings that would eventually melt.
the pistons may seize in the cylinder
why is sump draining (oil change) necessary?
the oil deteriorate after a while. deposits of carbon, dust and other impurities are brought into contact with the oil through constant running.
how often should you change your engine oil?
approximately every 5000 miles
how would you detect a defective oil pump?
when the oil light stays on after the engine is in motion or
if the oil pressure gauge does not show the correct pressure.
NB: whenever the engine is running out of oil these signs are also visible.
how are the big-end bearings lubricated?
through a passage in the crankshaft leading from the main bearings
what is the use of the oil filter?
to clean the oil while it is circulating through the engine.
what is the use of the carburetter?
it prepares a mixture of petrol and air suitable for the engine.
what is the purpose of the float chamber?
to control the amount of petrol which passes to the jets.
what is the use of the float and where is it found?
it operates the needle valve by the amount petrol in the float chamber.
it is found inside the float chamber.
what is the needle valve and where is it found?
it is a valve found at the inlet of the carburette
to control the flow of petrol entering the float chamber.
what is the use of the jets?
to vaporise the petrol passing through them to the engine .
how is the gas drawn into the engine?
by means of suction through the intake manifold by the induction stroke of the engine
how would you clear a choked jet?
by using an air pump to blow through the jet in the opposite direction of the petrol flow.
what is the carburetter attached to?
the intake manifold
