Energy (YR 8) Flashcards
What is energy?
The ability to do work or make things happen.
What is the unit that energy is measured in?
Joules (J)
What are the different forms of energy?
- Kinetic
- Thermal
- Light
- Nuclear
- Chemical
What is potential energy?
Potential energy is essentially stored energy, and turns into kinetic energy when used.
What is gravitational potential energy?
Energy stored in an object when it is lifted above the ground.
What is electrical potential energy?
Energy stored in electrostatic situations.
What is chemical potential energy?
Energy stored in chemicals like fuels or batteries.
What is elastic potential energy?
Energy stored when an object is stretched or compressed.
What is kinetic energy?
The energy that an object has when it’s moving.
If the object is rotating, it is then rotational kinetic energy.
What is nuclear energy?
The energy stored in unstable (radioactive) atoms.
What is thermal energy?
Thermal energy is the heat in an object. The amount of thermal energy in an object depends on temperature, mass, and material.
What is the law of conservation of energy?
Energy can not be created or destroyed; only converted from one form of energy to another.
What is mechanical energy?
The energy of an object in motion or the energy that is stored in objects.
What is the formula for energy efficiency?
Output Energy/Input Energy x 100
