Energy Sources and Power Stations Flashcards
What are the 2 broad types of energy resources?
Renewable and Non-renewable
What are the non-renewable energy sources? (4)
1) Coal
2) Oil
3) Natural Gas
(First 3 are the fossil fuels)
4) Nuclear Fuels (Uranium and Plutonium)
What are the 3 ‘properties’ of non-renewable fuels?
1) They will all ‘run out’ one day
2) They all do damage to the environment
3) They provide most of our energy
What are the renewable energy sources? (8)
Wind, Solar,
Waves, Geothermal,
Tides, Hydroelectric,
Food, Biofuels
What are the 3 ‘properties’ of renewable fuels?
1) They will never run out
2) Most of them do damage to the environment but in a less nasty way than non-renewables
3) They don’t provide much energy and some are unreliable because they depend on the weather
Energy sources can be [ ] to drive [ ] in power stations. Most of the electricity we use is [ ] from [ ] sources of energy in big [ ].
burned turbines generated non-renewable power stations
Describe the process of power stations
1) The fossil fuel is burned to convert its stored chemical energy into heat energy
2) The heat energy is used to heat water (or air) to produce steam
3) The steam turns a turbine, converting heat energy into kinetic energy
4) The turbine is connected to a generator, which transfers kinetic energy into electrical ennergy
