Energy Lessons 4-5 Flashcards
Which side of a dry cell has fewer volts? Which has more?
The positive side has less volts and the negative side has more
What is measured with a voltmeter?
The potential difference between two places
What is the unit of measurement of potential difference?
A volt
What is potential difference?
The difference between the number of electrons flowing in the positive side compared to the amount flowing in the negative side
What does a simple circuit include?
One light bulb, one dry cell, and one switch
What turns the circuit on?
Closing the switch
What turns the circuit off?
Opening the switch
Which side is the red test lead always supposed to be on?
The positive side
Which side is the black test lead always supposed to be on?
The negative side
What is the voltage reading on the batteries?
1.5 volts
What do the dry cells at as?
They act as electrical pumps to provide the energy to move the charges in the circuit
What is used to measure voltage?
A voltmeter
What kind of circuit is this?
A parallel circuit
When dry cells are connected in a parallel circuit, does the voltage increase or stay the same? What about the brightness?
Both stay the same
When dry cells are connected in a series circuit does the voltage increase our stay the same? What about the brightness?
Both increase
What type of energy is used by solar cell?
Radiant energy
What can magnetic forces cause?
They can cause electricity to move through copper wires
Do all the magnets face the same direction as they hang from the thread?
Yes they all face the same direction because one direction is north and one is south, so they are attracted to the north pole
What is a rule for the behavior of two magnets?
Like poles repel and unlike poles attract
What is voltage?
The term scientists use to describe the push that cause electrons to move through a circuit
How are electricity and magnetism related?
An electric wire can cause a disruption in a magnet’s magnetic force and makes the magnet move with the current electricity
How does a generator work?
The generator consists of powerful magnets surrounded by coils of copper wire. As the shaft rotates, the magnet turns inside the wire coil, producing an electric current. The electric current flows through power lines to homes and industries.
Why are the currents in our houses alternating currents?
It is called alternating current because the wires are passing through the north and south poles of the magnet (or the magnet is rotating within the copper coil), this causes the electric current to reverse its flow (or alternate) on a regular basis.
How does a water/wind turbine work?
The turbine can be a windmill or a water wheel which moves in a rotating motion (mechanical energy) to spin the magnet. The magnetic forces cause the electrons in the copper wire to move about. This moving of electrons creates electricity (electrical energy). The alternating current that is produced by the generator is then sent out into the community through wires to be used in places such as houses, schools, and businesses.
