Energy Lesson 1 Flashcards
What is the definition of an energy source?
Something such as oil, coal, or the sun which can be used to provide power for light, heat, machines and more.
What is potential energy?
Potential energy is possible or stored energy.
What is kinetic energy?
Kinetic energy is energy in motion.
Is coal a renewable energy source?
No
Is oil a renewable energy source?
No
Is solar energy it renewable energy source?
Yes
Is natural gas a renewable energy source?
No
Is wind renewable energy source?
Yes
Is nuclear energy a renewable energy source?
No
Is flowing water a renewable energy source?
Yes
Is biomass a renewable energy source?
Yes
Is geothermal energy a renewable energy source?
Yes
What is the definition of energy?
Energy is the ability to do work.
Is coal potential or kinetic energy?
Potential energy
Is the sun kinetic or potential energy
The sun is kinetic energy because the light and heat waves emitted from it are moving.
How do we use oil?
- plastic
- powers transportation (gasoline)
How do we use natural gas?
- used to power cars, airplanes, buses and more
- can be used to make plastic
- is used to heat homes
How do we use wind?
- turns turbines to produce electricity
How do we use flowing water?
-we use flowing water to power turbines that produce electricity
How do we use geothermal energy?
- electricity
What is chemical energy? what are some examples?
Chemical energy is potential energy stored in chemical bonds.
Examples:
- food
- wax
- cells in our bodies
What is electrical energy? What are some examples?
Electrical energy is the flow or movement of combined charges that create kinetic energy.
Example:
- lightning
- light bulbs
What is the law of conservation of energy?
Energy can not be created or destroyed, it can only change forms.
What is nuclear energy? What are some examples?
Nuclear energy is potential energy that can be released by the splitting of nuclear atoms.
Examples:
- nuclear power plant
- nuclear rods
- nuclear bomb
What is mechanical energy? What are some examples?
Mechanical energy is the amount of energy an object has based on its position.
Examples:
- ball moving through air
- car driving down street
- waterfall
Why is thermal energy? What are some examples?
The measure of energy that comes from the vibration of an objects particles.
Examples:
- melting ice cream
- melting ice cube
What is voltage?
Voltage is the way we measure the amount of electricity on an object.
What happened to the bulb on a parallel circuit?
The bulbs brightness stayed the same.
What type of energy is used in a battery?
Radiant Energy
