Energy lecture Flashcards
What is energy?
the ability to do work
Total energy is the sum of
potential energy and kinetic energy
potential energy
stored energy to do work; potential to do work; food; potential energy is converted to kinetic energy
kinetic energy
energy being used to do work (moving objects); reactions in your cells; muscle contractions
Calorie
Amount of energy required to raise 1 gram of water from 14.5 degrees C to 15.5 degrees C and potential energy stored as food
Laws of thermodynamics - First Law
energy cannot be created or destroyed - it is converted from one form to another
laws of thermodynamics - second law
energy conversions are NOT efficient; energy is lost as heat; heat loss is disordered and random
entropy
measure of randomness/disorder
All energy originates from
the sun
metabolism
chemical reactions and how fast an organism breaks down their food - respiration and photosynthesis
chemical reactions
absorb energy and release energy
chemical reactions absorb energy
photosynthesis and products have more energy than reactants
chemical reactions release energy
cellular respiration and products contain less energy than the reactants
Lost energy
is heat, it forms bonds, and fuels other reactions
Electron Transport Chain (ETC)
transfer of electrons to release energy
