Q

What is Mechanical Energy?

How do you find the mechanical energy of an object?

A

Mechanical Energy is the form of energy associated with the position and motion of an object. Sound is a form of mechanical energy.
Mechanical Energy = PE + KE
Examples: Waving, A kit flying in the air, a ball rolling (basically any movement that occurs)

Q

What is thermal energy?

A

Thermal Energy is the energy of the moving particles (atoms {Matter is made up of atoms] or molecules) in an object or substance.
***Atoms and molecules are ALWAYS moving
More KE of atoms and molecules = more thermal energy (molecular movement) and vice versa
Examples: The sun, fire, hot cocoa, EVERYTHING!!!!

Q

What is temperature actually a measurement of?

A

Temperature is actually a measurement of the kinetic energy of atoms and molecules.
***All matter has thermal energy because the atoms and molecules are always moving.

Q

What is electrical energy?

A

Electrical energy is the energy of moving electrons (like when you get a shock touching a doorknob)
Examples: Lightning, radios, ***batteries- they produce energy, so they could work for chemical energy, anything you plug in

6
Q

What is chemical energy?

A

Chemical energy is the energy that is used to bond atoms together or that is released when compounds break apart. ***This is potential energy-it is stored for later use.
Examples: match, battery, food, fuel

Q

What is nuclear energy?

A

Nuclear energy is the energy that is the result of nucei of atoms splitting apart (fission) or joining together (fusion)
Examples: Nuclear energy or bombs, sun, MRI’s

Q

What is work?

A

Work is when a force causes an object to move.
***If an object doesn’t move, then work was not done.
When work is done, energy is transferred from the object applying the force to the new object.
Simply: work is a transfer of energy.

Q

What is potential energy?

A

Potential Energy is stored energy. It is the energy an object has because of it’s position or shape.
An object with potential energy has the potential to do work but may not be doing work right now.

What is GPE measured in?

A

Joules

17
Q

What is elastic potential energy?

A

Elastic potential energy is the energy associated with objects that stretch or compress.
***The more something stretches, the more EPE it has.

18
Q

A change from one form of energy to another is called a what?

A

It is called an Energy Conversion.

19
Q

When does the energy convert from kinetic energy to potential energy?

A

Kinetic energy converts into Potential energy when an object slows down or moves higher.

20
Q

When does potential energy convert into kinetic energy?

A

Potential energy converts into kinetic energy when a stationary object starts to fall (for example).

21
Q

What is an energy conversion?

A

It’s a change from one form of energy to another.

22
Q

What’s kinetic to potential?

A

Its an energy conversion when an objet slows down or moves higher.

23
Q

What is the law of conservation of energy?

A

“Energy is neither created nor destroyed. It just changes forms.”

24
Q

What is kinetic energy?

A

it’s the energy of motion. Objects with kinetic energy are doing work.
