Endurance Training and Norms Flashcards
What is RPE?
rate of perceived exertion - pt’s subjective response during activity
What is the Modified Borg Scale? Scale ratings?
RPE scale; 0-10
0 - at rest
1 - very easy
2 - somewhat easy
3 - moderate
4 - somewhat hard
5/6 - hard
7-9 - very hard
10 - very, very hard
What is the dyspnea scale? Grades?
Scale used to measure shortness of breath
Grade 0 - no dyspnea; not troubled w/ breathlessness except w/ strenuous exercise
Grade 1 - slight dyspnea; SOB when hurrying on a surface level or walking slightly up hill
Grade 2 - moderate dyspnea; walks slower than normal based on age and level of surface, has to stop for a breath when walking on level surface and at own pace
Grade 3 - severe dyspnea; stops for breath after walking 100 yards or after a few mins on a surface level
Grade 4 - very severe dyspnea; too breathless to leave the house or becomes breathless while dressing/undressing
Explain the requirements, pros and cons of 6 MWT
Requirements: 30m hallway
Pros: good reproducibility, easy to administer, requires little equipment, assesses exercise tolerance in variety of pt populations
Cons: needs space (can’t perform in apartment, home, or medical office)
