endocrine tissue Flashcards
what is produced in the hypothalamus
GnRH, GHRH, SS, TRH, DA, CRH
Name the 3 sections of the anterior pituitary
pars distalis, pars intermedia, pars tuberalis
what is produced in the pars distalis
FSH, LH, GH, TSH, PRL, ACTH
Name types of pituitary adenomas in different breeds
dog and horse - pars intermedia adenoma (can be hormonally active or not, usually large), can have pars distils non functioning or functioning - ACTH secreting in dogs causing lipolysis, protein catabolism, gluconeogenesis
clinical signs of ACTH secreting pituitary adenoma
muscle wasting, big liver, alopecia, thin skin, poor wound healing, fat pads on neck and shoulders, enlarged abdo
name a disease of the neurohypophysis
central diabetes insipidus
explain DI
compression of hyp? marked PU/PD and hypotonic urine, d/t inadequate production of ADH, can be caused by obliteration of the pars nervosa by cyst or tumour
signs of hyperadrenocorticism
AKA cushings
increased CRH and ACTH = PU/PD, pot belly, muscle weakness, usually d/t pit tumour
signs of hypoadrenocorticism
AKA addisons
decrease in gulch and mineralocorticoids, = stressed, increased k+, tissue underperfusion, v+, d+, dehydration
actions of thyroid hormones?
alterations in metabolism, increased CO, increased heat production by increased BMR
what is a goitre
non-neoplastic, non-inflame enlargement of the thyroid
causes of goitres
genetic enzymatic defect, goitrogenic substances, iodine deficiency in calves, iodine excess in foals
hyperthyroidism signs
weight loss, rapid growth and bone maturation, goitre? staring eyes, muscle weakness, tremor, nervous, sweating, fast HR and AF
hypothyroidism signs
bradycardia, weight gain, sluggishness d/t IM thyroiditis, idiopathic, non functioning tumours
