Endocrine System and medication Flashcards
How many endocrine glands are there?
10 +
What do endocrine glands do?
they release hormones they act on tissues further away and chemicals that act locally
what are hormones?
Mostly small proteins (amino acids), water soluble
Steroids are lipid soluble and based on cholesterol
Are released and circulate, until bind to specific receptor
Water soluble hormones bind to receptor on outside of plasma membrane
Steroids bind to receptor on outside of nuclear membrane (enter cell), and so do thyroid hormones
what are the actions of hormones?
Alters characteristic of membrane
Stimulates or inhibits synthesis of regulatory molecules inside cell
Activates or deactivates enzymes
Causes cell to start secreting
Causes cell replication
How are the hormones controlled?
Hormones are secreted in short bursts when needed.
Secretion is regulated by:
Signals from the nervous system
Chemical changes in the blood
Other hormones

What do the hypothalamus and pituitary glands do?
The hypothalamus and pituitary gland work together to control other endocrine glands
They are connected by the infundibulum
What hormones do the anterior glands secrete?
The anterior pituitary gland secretes:
Human growth hormone (hGH)
Thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH)
Follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH)
Luteinizing hormone (LH)
Prolactin (PRL)
Adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH)
Melanocyte-stimulating hormone (MSH)
