What is a hormone?
it is a chemical messenger from one cell to another.

What is the pituitary glands job?
master control organ of the endocrine system
What does the anterior lobe of the pituitary gland do?
controlled by the hypothalamus, secretes trophic hormones, acts indirectly by stimulating the target organ to release another hormone which in turn influences the second target organ.
what does the posterior lobe of the pituitary gland do?
acts DIRECTLY on target organ, makes vasopressin (antidiretic), and makes oxytocin.
types of thyroid hormones?
Triiodothyronine (T3) and Thyroxine (T4)
require iodine for production.
calcitonin- lowers blood calcium.
what do the thyroid hormones do?
increasee metabolismm, blood calcium levels, and growth in young animals.
What is hypOthyroidism?
most common in dogs.
2 types-primary acquired (goes away) and central acquired (rare)
HypOthyroidism clinical signs?
weight gain. mohock alopecia. alopecia of tail. dry hair. cold intolerance. anemia. high choloesterol.
What is hypErthyroidism?
Most common endocrine disorder in cats.
ACTH?
Increases production of CORTISOL.
produced by adrenal gland.
Aldosterone affects?
water levels/salt -made in adreanal gland
Glucocorticoids affect?
sugar levels -made in adreanal gland
Corisol affects?
pain tolerance -made in adreanal gland
Androgens affect?
sexdrive/sexyness - made in adreanal gland
