Endocrine System Flashcards
Definition of endocrine:
secreting internally; helps maintain homeostasis; secrete hormones directly into the blood stream
Does endocrine glands have ducts?
No, ductless
Definition of hormones:
chemical messengers for the endocrine system, travel to distant cells
The regulation of hormone secretion occurs through a process called what?
negative feedback
Hormone problems occur when what is not functioning?
regulation is not functioning; self- regulating
The negative feedback process:
Brain—-Endocrine Gland—–Hormone level (repeat)
8 major glands:
- pituitary;
- parathyroid;
- thyroid;
- adrenal;
- kidney;
- pancreas;
- ovary;
- testes
Where is the Pit. Gland located in?
in diencephalon
The Pit. Gland AKA
Master Gland
The pit. gland communicates with the what?
hypothalamus; which is the interface between the nervous system (brain) and the endocrine system
What size is the pit gland?
size of a pea; dangles by a narrow stalk from the hypothalamus
2 lobes of the pituitary gland:
- Posterior Lobe;
2. Anterior Lobe
This lobe stores and releases 2 hormones produced by the hypothalamus- ADH and oxytocin
Posterior Lobe
What 7 hormones does the Anterior Lobe produce:
MSH; GH; Prolactin; TSH; ACTH; FSH; LH
What does the thyroid gland contain?
thyroid hormone (T3 and T4) and calcitonin
The parathyroid gland contains what hormone?
parathyroid hormone
The adrenal gland contains what?
sex hormones, cortisol, aldosterone, epinephrine and norepinephrine
What does the pancreas contain?
insulin
What two hormones does the ovaries contain?
estrogen and progesterone
What hormone does testis contain?
testosterone AKA androgen
