Bacteria & Protozoa & Fungi Flashcards
Single cell organism that can reproduce, no true nucleus; produce toxic substances
Bacteria
2 types of bacteria toxins:
Septicemia (blood infx, worse); Toxemia (toxins in blood stream)
5 examples of classifications of bacteria:
Gram +, Gram -; Shape; Locomotion; Spore formation; Aerobic or anaerobic
3 common types of bacteria in vet meds:
- Spirochaetales (oder)- leptospira spp/Borrelia spp;
- Mycoplasma spp. (genus)- NO CELL WALL
- Rickettsiales (order)- Rickettsia, Ehrlichia, Anaplasm spp.
Single cell organisms, more advanced than bacteria, have a cell membrane; Have means of locomotion, form spores, and have a complex lifecycle
Protozoa
3 major types of fungi:
- Dermatophytes- hair, skin, nails, claws (ringworm);
- Saprophytes- found in env (opportunistic);
- Yeasts- many types, skin on mucous membranes
Often involved in decomposition of dead tissue; not normal in living tissue
Fungi
5 examples of fungi in vet medicine:
ringworm; aspergilla; malassezia; cryptococcus; blastomyces
Microsporum Canis, zoonotic, it is a fungus, not a worm, can identify hyphae using lactophenol cotton blue stain from culture or hair sample
Ringworm
Saprophyte, causes local or generalized soft tissue infections usually in the nose or lungs due to inhalation decaying vegetation, can cause pneumonia, secretes aflatoxins
Aspergilla
Yeast, common in ears and skin, secondary to allergies or other dz
Malassezia
Encapsulated yeast, zoonotic, causes systemic infection, identify in tissue using India Ink stain, an antigen test is available(blood test) and is very reliable
Cryptococcus
Dimorphic fungi, yeast like growth in tissur, saprophyte like growth in env, causes systemic infection especially in skin and resp tract, more common in dogs (uncommon in cats), identify organism in tissue, blood test available but not accurate; ZOONOTIC
Blastomyces
