Endocrine System Flashcards
What detects stimuli?
Receptor
What type of message is sent from a receptor?
Electrical impulse
How are messages transported around the body?
Nerves via Neurotransmitters and synapses
Speed of response to impulse from body?
Slow (500 milliseconds) due to diffusion
Name a common gland within the endocrine system
Thyroid gland
Adrenal gland
Pituitary gland
Testis
What does the thyroid gland create and why?
Creates thyroxin for metabolic rate
Name Differences between hormones and nerves
Hormones:
-Chemical
-Travel via blood
-Diffuses (out of the blood)
-last longer
-hormones have a widespread effect on the body and organs
Nerves:
-electrical
-travels via impulses
-diffuses (neurotransmitters)
-instant response
-short effect
-impulse only affects few cells
What does the adrenal gland effect?
-increases heart rate
-increases blood sugar level
-increases breathing rate
-increases blood flow to muscles
What is negative feedback?
This is when different chemicals are released to inhibit the other to regulate the balance of the two chemicals
What does testosterone cause in puberty?
-promotes make secondary sexual characteristics
-voice breaking
-increased muscle
-Pubic hair and facial hair
-sperm production
What does oestrogen do in puberty?
-promotes sexual secondary characteristics
-menstrual cycle
-breast develop
-pubic hair growth
-hips widen
