Osmoregularion - Kidneys Flashcards
What happens in the Glomerulus (above the Bowman’s Capsule)?
An artery travels through it and gets thinner so its forced to leak due to the hydrostatic pressure where its filters through a membrane and turned into a filtrate
What surrounds the PCT (first section of the nephron)
Active protein carriers
What do the active protein carriers do?
They remove the things the body wants to reuse like water, sodium and glucose
What is the first few things removed from the filtrate?
Water, sodium and glucose
What is removed during the Loop of Henle?
Water on the way down and sodium on the way up
Are there any active protein carriers in the DCR (last area before the ureter)
No
What happens after the filtrate is filtered and enters the collecting ducts
It goes down to the bladder to be urinated
(however in some scenarios where you are in need of more water-dehydration-the body can absorb more water before it’s urinated using the hormone ADH (anti-diuretic hormone))
Where is the nephron found?
Liver
What is the glomerus?
A ball of blood vessels above the Bowman’s capsule
What does active transport require to work?
Energy
What is a dialysis machine?
A machine used by people with kidney problems which filters their blood for them using dialysis fluid
What do people on dialysis machines need to worry about?
careful diet as it affects heart rate and blood pressure
How long do kidney transplants last?
9-10 years
What happens when an organ is rejected by your body?
The body doesn’t recognise the organ as its own so the immune system kills it
What are advantages of a kidney transplant?
Lead a more normal life with more freedom and cheaper for NHS
